Wretched Lives (Hubog)

Wretched Lives (Hubog)

Categories: Drama, Crime, Foreign, Politics

This beautifully crafted, hard-hitting Filipino drama focuses on Vanessa, a cosmetics consultant who is forced to care for her mentally challenged sister after the sudden death of their mother. Her boyfriend Olivier is an unreliable hustler, and she soon abandons him for the ostensibly caring and liberal Uno. But Uno isn't exactly who he seems—and he makes Olivier's petty crimes look like a choirboy’s indiscretions. Set in the Philippines of the early 1990s (during the short-lived and ill-fated reign of Joseph Estrada), director Joel Lamangan offers up a microcosm of a hellish society in which the corrupt elite exploit the poor for purely political purposes. An accomplished work of social realism, WRETCHED LIVES (HUBOG) is presented in Tagalog with English subtitles. This film is an official selection of the prestigious, award-winning Global Lens Collection, presented by the Global Film Initiative.
