USA/CHINA: PAST PRESENT FUTURE is a must-see for all those interested in US–China relations. Robert Carl Cohen, the NBC Special Correspondent who filmed throughout China in 1957, interviews Ambassador James R. Lilley, former CIA Station Chief in Beijing and Ambassador to both South Korea and China. Their discussion covers the end of World War II in 1945, through the 1949 Communist assumption of power; to the present day and Lilley's hopes for the future. Topics include the failure of US paramilitary actions in 1950s Tibet; the results of Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution in the 1960s; the Nixon-initiated Ping-Pong Diplomacy of the 1970s; Deng Xiaoping's opening of the country to capitalist investment and technology; the achievements of Jiang Zemin; the severe problems facing Hu Jintao; and the need for the US and China to cooperate with other nations in solving the economic, political and environmental challenges of the 21st century.
