Shadow Kill (Nizhalkkuthu)

Categories: Drama, Foreign, War

Set in 1941, the accomplished Indian drama SHADOW KILL (NIZHALKKUTHU) focuses on a hangman who has spent his life carrying out politically motivated executions in his southern village. He is now old and so wracked with guilt that he has taken to heavy drinking and praying to the goddess Kali for forgiveness. One of the leading lights of the New Indian Cinema, director Adoor Gopalakrishnan (who has been called "India's greatest living filmmaker" by the Cleveland Institute of Art), has set the film on the violent cusp of Indian independence from British colonial rule, pitting Gandhian principles against the harsher traditions of punishment and retribution. The subtly nuanced performances bring the ever-present questions to bear on contemporary political debate in the country. SHADOW KILL (NIZHALKKUTHU) is presented in Hindi with English subtitles. This film is an official selection of the prestigious, award-winning Global Lens Collection, presented by the Global Film Initiative.
