Shadows of a Leader: Qaddafi's Female Bodyguards

Shadows of a Leader: Qaddafi's Female Bodyguards
59:49 | 2012

Categories: Documentary, Biography, Politics

Filmed in 2003 but released after the 2011 rebellion, SHADOWS OF A LEADER: QADDAFI'S FEMALE BODYGUARDS takes a fascinating look inside one of the Middle East's most unusual military units—Libya's elite corps of women (informally nicknamed "The Amazonian Guard" by Western journalists) who were assigned to guard the country's former supreme leader, Muammar Qaddafi. Through intensive interviews with female army officers and other Libyan military personnel, this documentary by Rania Ajami explores how these women embodied the tensions between Islam, feminism, modernity and old-style dictatorship in a nomadic society.
