Set in the devastating aftermath of the 1975 Angolan revolution, this coming-of-age drama chronicles the war's impact on its most innocent survivors. Eleven-year-old N'dala and several other children orphaned in a village massacre are saved by a nun and flown to the capital city of Luanda on a military transport plane. In the confusion at the airport, N'dala decides to run away from his group and wend his way through this strange and forbidding city. He meets the lively and charismatic thirteen-year-old Zé, who is rehearsing a play about a heroic soldier with some other schoolchildren on the street. Zé and his friends, who drift amongst Luanda's homeless population, fascinate N'dala—and he is tragically pulled into their way of life. Director Maria Joo Ganga's employs opposing visual styles that reflect N'dala's journey through the film. His discovery of the seaside is bathed in brilliant blues and yellows reflecting the purity of sea and sky; for his connection with Zé, she uses a clandestine world of interiors with dilapidated apartments and smoky, ramshackle bars redolent of perpetual night. HOLLOW CITY (NA CIDADE VAZIA) is presented in Portuguese with English subtitles. This film is an official selection of the prestigious, award-winning Global Lens Collection, presented by the Global Film Initiative.
