Fighting in Southwest Louisiana: Gay Life in Rural America

Fighting in Southwest Louisiana: Gay Life in Rural America

Categories: Documentary, Health and Food, LGBT

Danny Cooper and Ben Royal are an openly gay couple living in the harsh social environment of rural Louisiana. They make no compromises to survive in that environment. "People respect you as long as you respect yourself," says Danny, a mailman. The same is true when it comes to Danny's seropositive status. "They say that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, so that's what I try to do. Maybe I'm going to die, but I'm still going to live until I do." Danny did die of AIDS, a year after the film was made. His courage, charisma, and folksy humor make him a strong positive role model, especially for gay people and people with HIV living in hostile environments.
